Just acquired one 1918 DWM Luger from a vet. These mags were made during the TR period, so they required 'current' markings.

You will sometimes see Imperial Lugers with serial number matching, aluminum based mags with TD acceptance marks. The 1920 Weimar Government mark was not stamped on a lot of weapons, especially those kept in storage and not issued out to the police or the 100,000 man allowed army. There was no reason to reproof these weapons at a later date, unless critical parts were replaced. These proof marks were placed on Lugers during the manufactering process and the military acceptance. Imperial proofed military Lugers were not remarked during the 3ed Reich, unless they were shipped to Mauser to be reworked. If the magazine is matching wood bottom and serial number it is even more likely that this was an officer owned Luger, as these tended to get replaced and upgraded in the 20's and 30's with metal bottom mags. Check to see if the firing pin is fluted. In my experience you would not find 3rd Reich stamping unless the weapon went through some type of higher level repair or modification.there are some exceptions to this, but not many. It is estimated that around 100,000 alone were in the hands of the police at the beginning of the war and it is not hard to believe that Heer, private owned and para military stocks could have totaled the other 100,000 or so. Most of these would be at least 1920 property marked in the receiver. Some well informed researchers estimate that perhaps 200,000 + or - WWI era Lugers were used by the Germans in WWII.

It is very possible that this Luger was a personal pistol from WWI that was carried by an officer in WWII with no additional markings. Was it common that Imperial era weapons were pressed into Third Reich service without receiving further marks? Is it possible that this was the personal weapon of a WWI vet and hence the absence of Third Reich stamping? Thanks, Cesar. But I was surprised to see that the weapon does not have any Third Reich era marks only the Imperial proof marks are present. He picked it up from a pile of pistols when the German 148th Infantry Division surrendered to Brazilian troops (nice to know which unit the weapon belonged to BTW).
